mywaytoo activities and games,at first glance, appear to be more akin to maths lessons rather than something to aid the effects of Autism. And, of course, they may be used for number work with all young children of all abilities. As the name, mywaytoo, I hope, suggests, these activities and games allow children to work at their own level. Family siblings can play together as younger children can select at their level, whilst older children can explore more advanced notions. Young school children in the same classroom can be set the same tasks using the same activities and games as each can work in accordance with their own curiosity and understanding. And the younger and/or less able children may learn from seeing what the others do, or, at least, may have their own theories challenged.
mywaytoo activities and games have been designed to move away from the more structured approach that is frequently adopted in educational systems, whilst still keeping within the bounds of sameness that is desired by those with Autism. The idea of choice and selection is not new to Autism; however, with mywaytoo activities and games, the child is presented with several variations of an object at the same time. And not just any object..... but rather an object that the child truely wants, because he truely understands it: Food... Take an apple, for example. After having eaten an apple, a child will have been exposed to its shape, colour, texture, smell, taste, etc.. He can clearly differentiate something about the apple he has eaten that makes it an apple and not a tennis ball; nevertheless, in may cases, he cannot communicate this information.
