Bird's Beak Games

This is a very exciting download, but it does require a minimal level of manual dexterity and understanding. It uses our Bird's Beak design as a way of learning  about rhymes... sounds, pictures, words. And it gives a reason to say the words... to actually hear yourself say the rhyming words aloud whilst thinking about more than one thing at a time.

Access the inside of the beak and find the Odd One Out. Say why it is different... and check for more odd ones too, amongst the variety of options mainly based on Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) words. There are no right or wrong answers... only True answers.

There are ??? pre-designed Beaks to choose from, based on the central vowel: 5, each with one vowel sound, and ??? with a mixture of vowels. Or use the Blank beak and design your own games!

Card Games

Matching card games, such as Snap and Pairs, are a great way to reinforce learning about words and their sounds. They give a reason to actually say the words... to pronounce them and hear yourself pronouncing them... to feel and see the sameness as well as hearing it. With our cards, there are no right or wrong answers... only 'true' answers, so differing abilities can play the same game and learn from each other.

With our Rhyming cards, each of the selected word endings has 4 rhyming options, illustrated with our unique photographs or graphics of everyday items or actions. Gone are the days when only one item matched another item!

Rhyming cards are presented in a variety of formats to optimise the number of rhyming games and activities that are available, such as:
pictures and words
pictures only
words only
words and space
words with cutlines
lists of rhyming words.

Cards can match, or snap, because:
the items in the pictures rhyme
they are the same picture
the word on the card rhymes with the picture
the word on the card is the item in the picture
Or there can be an Odd One Out that doesn't rhyme
etc, etc, etc
If it's true, then it's right!

Our rhyming card sheets have been designed for UK A4 paper size using PDF Print settings of 100% with Page Scaling set to 'None'. Instructions are suggested for US paper sizes, Legal and Letter.

Printing onto 200g card is recommended to ensure that the image doesn't show through on the reverse side. Then games, such as Pairs, can be played fairly with the picture side facing downwards. Remember that autistic children are so astute that very likely they would be the ones using this infomation but in a way different to what might be expected.

Download and make 7cm x 7cm (2.75inch x 2.75inch) cards, and laminate if required. Encourage discussion with matching games like Snap... encouraging reasons why things are the same, or why they are different.

DIY Rhyming Cards

Here you can cut out and make your own rhyming cards... we supply the word and a space for you to add in a drawing or a picture of your own. They can choose the same rhyming items as ours or others that they have thought of. Laminate if required, or better still, let the children play rhyming games with them... and take theirs home with them at the end of the day.

Cut the rhyming cards out first so that the children can pick 2 cards that will rhyme

Cards can match, or snap, because:
the items in the pictures rhyme
they are the same picture
the word on the card rhymes with the picture
the word on the card is the item in the picture
etc, etc, etc
If it's true, then it's right!
